my mind stabs me in the back yet again

Am i the only person who sees these commercials and thinks 'goatse'?

soon to be an exhibition sport in the next olympics?

I love the Visa Debit commercial with the guy tossing the pizza dough.  But what's his story?  Turns out the dude is on the United States Pizza Team (and the commercial is behind the link, in case you haven't seen it, plus there's more of him on YouTube).  They'll make a team out of anything these days, it seems... but watching him work is pretty damn cool.

this is the man whose oracular utterances would goose the market in the `90s? what the fuck?

This is over five years old now, but it's amazingly entertaining.  Bernie Sanders pummels Alan Greenspan for being, well, Alan Greenspan.

how to turn your toddler into techno

The first 40 seconds are disorienting, like listening to a musician warm up.  Thanks to [info]schwa242.

walt disney? piker

[info]wacky_hijinx shared this YouTube clip of a Little Nemo animation that, despite being nearly 100 years old, is pretty damn awesome.

tin star

Somehow, i missed this blip in the music scene of the late `90s.  I'm glad that XM's Lucy managed to bring to my attention, despite the delay.  I found this song so compelling that i bought The Thrill Kisser off some used CD vendor on Amazon; i got it today and i've enjoyed listening to it.

i think my eyebrows have been singed off

Keith Olbermann pulls out all the stops on the "rip Dubya a new asshole" pipe organ and delivers a twelve-minute virtuoso performance.  Thanks to [info]drieuxster.

garnish with beak

I've always maintained that whistling as part of music is inevitably awful.  It feels intrusive, like someone's playing a cheap instrument amidst high-quality instruments, or worse.  It turns out, of course, that it's a perfectly good instrument in the hands... uh, mouth of an expert.  Such as Andrew Bird.

because "fingernailball" doesn't quite roll off the tongue

In case you've never seen a mere mortal try to catch a knuckleball, Jim Caple dons the tools of ignorance to try to catch R. A. Dickey's pitches.  Dickey was a curiosity when he hit the majors a few years ago because his pitching arm does not have an ulnar collateral ligament (what's replaced in Tommy John surgery); he was either born without one, or it disintegrated early in his life.

That's right, babies; it'll be spring this weekend, and baseball starts the week after that.  I'm in two fantasy baseball leagues, one with [info]jwgh and another with a bunch of dorks from PROTRADE.  WHEE FUN

in the wake of the week

Via [info]thequietquiet, a video of acrobatic ball kicking and juggling.  Fake?  Maybe, but still pretty good.

If you're curious to know what [info]2wanda's and my relationship was like early on, you should rent Prime, VORSICHT: SPOILER ).

Another fine Improv Everywhere stunt (thanks, [info]en_ki).

Lyndon LaRouche asks, "Is the Devil in your laptop?" (thanks, [info]tritone).

[info]racerxmachina let me know that SJSU's president issued a letter banning blood drives on campus due to the FDA's policy that bans gay men (or, indeed, any man who's had sex with another man) from donating blood.  A tough decision, but i support Kassing's rationale and i hope that his efforts (among those of other campuses) get the FDA to reconsider the policy once we get someone in the White House who isn't an utter imbecile.

"they're riverdance-fighting!"

If you mix bluegrass, an old kung fu movie, traditional Irish dancing, the breakdance-fighting scene from Zoolander, and John Paul Jones, you might end up with a video like Uncle Earl's "Streak o' Lean, Streak o' Fat".

and now, piggies, it's time for some culture

Famed cellist Pau Casals was filmed performing Bach's Suite No. 1 for Solo Cello at the Abbaye Saint-Michel-de-Cuxa in August 1954.  It now exists on YouTube, as part 1 and part 2.

i've been wanting to see this for quite some time

I'd love to see an AMV of Disney's "Motor Mania" backed by Soundgarden's "Ty Cobb".

oldie but goodie

I give you Tokyo Breakfast.  Nobody seemed to know where this came from when it first appeared on the Net a couple of years ago; turns out it was written and filmed by a couple of guys who used to do stuff for MTV (who are now, according to Cult of the Dead Cow, working with Spike Jonze) and submitted it to the 2001 Ohio Independent Film Festival & Market.

the literal definition of 'unstoppable'

Jonathan Cheechoo of the San Jose Sharks somehow gets down low, puts his stick between his legs, and wrists the puck BEHIND him for one hell of a goal. As a goalie, i feel for Aebischer; you can't stop crazy shit like that. You just sit there on your ass going "WTF" over and over again.

antisocial networks

Here's a cool and funny rant (Quicktime) about social networks. Thanks to [info]kiad.

news of the week

McGill University was using Turnitin (sounds like an anti-fungal to me) on a trial basis to detect plagiarism. A student refused to turn in his assignments to the site as a prerequisite to be graded, and was given a zero grade. After some runaround, McGill agreed to grade his papers without Turnitin's input.

Cool stuff via Mike Andrews in The Other Place: It's not the volts, it's the amps (the video ain't there anymore; try this).

"and australia's like, 'wtf?^^'"

Just another eschatological point of view.

the terrible secret of soy sauce

And you thought soy sauce was just a condiment.

Note to [info]hako: here's the Japanese version.
